Lynda Demerse was expecting to spend the weekend of Dec. 11 and 12 watching her son play in the Silver Stick tournament in Haliburton, retiring in the evenings to a cozy room at the Wigamog Inn Resort.
Then she received a call from the manager of her son's team. The Wigamog is closed, he said.
Demerse called Wigamog. No answer. She tried to leave a message. The mailbox was full.
She checked her Visa statement – a $100 deposit had been taken off her card for the room.
"I spoke with Visa and they called the inn and could only get voicemail. I need confirmation that it has closed" to get the money back, Demerse said.
Without a response from the inn, Demerse will have to wait until after the tournament has passed to get her money back from Visa.
She said at least three other hockey families are in the same position as she is.
Over the past two weeks, the Echo has received calls from other inn patrons in the same position.
Attempts to contact staff at the Wigamog were unfruitful.
"They're in the middle of negotiations right now with a new management team. Right now that's about all I can say," said Sylvia Holland, owner of Wind in the Willows Day Spa, next to Wigamog and used by Wigamog clients.
"I'm here, business as usual. That's what I can tell you," Holland said.
Holland confirmed that the Wigamog Inn would be closed until spring, adding that renovations will be done during that time.
But it's the communications void that bothers Demerse.
"We just want to get our money back," she said.
